National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)

Lee County requires that only clean rainwater enter Lee County waters. Polluted stormwater runoff is a leading cause of impairment to surface waters in the United States. Polluted runoff may result in a loss in aesthetic value and presents threats to public health due to contaminated food, drinking water supplies and recreational waterways; and the destruction of fish, wildlife and aquatic life habitats.

Mandated by Congress under the Clean Water Act, the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) addresses the non-agricultural sources of stormwater discharges that adversely affect the quality of our nation's waters. The program uses the NPDES permitting mechanism to require the use of controls designed to prevent harmful pollutants from being washed away by stormwater runoff into local water bodies.
