Q: What animals must be vaccinated against rabies and licensed by Lee County? 
A: All cats, dogs and ferrets, four months of age or older, that live in Lee County for at least 30 days per year must be vaccinated against rabies and licensed by Lee County. If your pet's rabies vaccine is still current from another state, you only need to purchase a Lee County license, which will expire when the rabies vaccination expires.

Q: Why must pets be licensed?
A: This ordinance enables Lee County Domestic Animal Services to return pets to their owners when they are lost. It also ensures that all pets receive a current rabies vaccination, which is necessary for public health and safety because this fatal disease is transmissible to humans.

Q: What is the cost of a Lee County license?
A: The following license fees for dogs, cats and ferrets became effective Dec. 2, 2014. All fees collected go toward spay and neuter programs to reduce pet overpopulation in Lee County:

Note: A Lee County pet license is the only tag required by law – it serves as both a rabies vaccination tag and pet registration tag for Lee County. If you are late purchasing your license, it will still expire when the rabies vaccination expires.

Q: How do I avoid a late fee and other penalties?
A: The license is due the day the rabies vaccination is given. If you have not purchased the license within 30 days, a late fee of $25 will be assessed. Late fees are collectable for up to three years. By delaying the purchase of the county license, you risk the possibility of receiving a citation of up to $500 per animal per violation. First violations average between $75 and $100, plus court costs.

Q: How do I purchase a Lee County license?
A: You can buy a Lee County license one of four ways:

1. From your veterinarian when your pet receives its rabies vaccination. If your veterinarian does not sell licenses, see options 2 and 3 below.
2. At Lee County Domestic Animal Services, 5600 Banner Drive, Fort Myers, FL 33912. Animal Services' Licensing Department is located in the Veterinary Services Center (blue building entrance), off Six Mile Cypress Parkway next to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, is open from 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday (excluding holidays). On Saturdays (excluding holidays) pet licenses may be purchased at Animal Services' Lost and Found Pet Center (orange building entrance) from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
   You must bring:
• COPY of your pet's rabies certificate – marked by the veterinarian as to whether the pet is sterilized; and if microchipped, including microchip number.
• If rabies certificate is in the name of rescue or shelter where pet was acquired, please include copy of adoption contract.
  
• Appropriate fee by check or money order made payable to Lee County Domestic Animal Services, or by credit card (VISA, MasterCard and Discover).
3. By mail to the address in option 2 above. You must send in:
• COPY of your pet's rabies certificate – marked by the veterinarian as to whether the pet is sterilized; and if microchipped, including microchip number.
• Appropriate fee by check or money order only, made payable to Lee County Domestic Animal Services.

Q: How does Animal Services know my pet's license status?
A: Florida State Statute requires your veterinarian to notify Animal Services when your pet has received a rabies vaccination and whether a county license was purchased. We then send letters to pet owners who have not purchased a license based on that information. Please let us know if any information is incorrect by contacting us at license@leegov.com.
