What is a Microchip?

A Microchip ID is a small computer chip, about the size of a grain of rice. It is implanted under the animal's skin, between the shoulder blades. Unlike other forms of identification, a Microchip ID cannot be removed or lost. Very often, pets slip out of their collars or lose tags. With a Microchip ID, your pet will have a much greater chance of being returned to you if it is lost.

How Does a Microchip Work?

The microchip can be scanned by equipment that most Animal Control agencies, humane organizations and veterinarians carry as part of their regular equipment. All pets without identification are scanned at Lee County Domestic Animal Services. Each microchip has a unique number that belongs to one pet only.

Microchip Registration

For an additional fee, you have the option of registering your pet's microchip number in a national database. Even if your pet is lost out-of-state, you can be identified as the owner, and the pet can be returned to you. If you chose not to nationally register your pet's microchip and your pet is found, the finder will be referred to our agency for your information. In either case, it is imperative that you keep your contact information current.
