Library System to Kick Off Events for 2007 Countywide Book Club

FORT MYERS, Fla., September 20, 2007 – Local residents should mark their calendars in expectation of things to come as they probe "Florida Roadkill" ─ the public's preferred read for Lee County's fourth One Book, One Community project.

In less than three weeks, the Lee County Library System will launch a series of landmark events in support of the One Book, One Community: Lee County Reads "Florida Roadkill" campaign ─ which bonds residents as they read the same book at the same time and then engage in related recreational activities. The novel, an unconventional pick compared to featured book club titles from previous years, details the creative killings of anti-hero Serge Storms and his eccentric sidekicks.

"To our knowledge, no one else has used this title or anything quite like it," said library development specialist Karen Sloan. "This book has given us great creative license to develop a unique campaign and related components."

Throughout October, participants of the communitywide book club will have several opportunities to meet the mastermind of "Florida Roadkill," join group discussions about the novel and much more. Activities will kick off with a "Tastes Just Like Chicken" event, scheduled for 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at Joe's Crab Shack (2024 W. First St. in the Fort Myers River District). Tampa Bay author Tim Dorsey will be on hand to talk with fans, give them a taste of what "Florida Roadkill" is all about and sign copies of the novel. The featured book and Dorsey's other published works will be available for purchase there, too. Registration is required for the kick-off event. The public should call (239) 461-2918 to preregister.

In the meantime, readers can vie to win a round-trip for two on the Key West Express by playing the Online Scavenger Hunt for Serge's Top Secret Florida Box. Participants hone their Internet search skills as they use clues to find a treasure chest featured on various local business Web sites.
