Lee County Facilities Management will be installing new doors at the historic Old County Courthouse, Broadway side, this Friday (Mar. 30) beginning at about 8:30 in the morning.

This is really good news because the old doors are in bad shape.  The new doors are made of the same oak, and will use the same glass and hardware that will be removed from the existing doors.

Much of the work done on the doors used the same carpentry techniques used to fabricate the original doors and Facilities Management's carpentry shop really pitched in to make them reflect the original work.  When the county was quoted a price from a historical restoration company, it was told the price plus installation for these Broadway doors would be around $25,000.

Facilities' in house shop made the doors for about half the price.  It was suggested that the Monroe doors are going to need replacement in the next couple of years and the carpenters, having learned how to make the doors, and having the right tools and forms made, wanted to replace them now rather than have to retool and relearn the process again.  With the money saved they will do just that and replace the Monroe doors in the weeks ahead.  The doors on the main entrance are protected under an overhang and are not in bad shape, so they will remain.
